Cloughey & District Tennis Club

Update 10/8/08

Still no sign of dry weather - forecast is for rain or showers every day next week, so the contractors may not be able to complete the work.  However, Cloughey often escapes the rain and if we can persuade them to come down there might just be 2 dry days in a row !  Check out local forecast for the next 7 days - click here

We are still keen to run the Junior Coaching week on 18-22 Aug, but will not be able to take any bookings or publicise it until the work is complete - so it is looking quite doubtful.  Our back-up plan is to put it back to 25-29th August which is our last chance to run it during the school holidays.  We apologise to all those who have registered interest - but the delays are outside our control.  We will be arranging regular coaching in the Autumn for Club members - junior and senior.

We are very frustrated by the delays in completing the refurbishment of the tennis courts - a job which started in mid-May, when the weather was sunny and we had no rain for 5 weeks.

The new Club will hold playing sessions for all members and prospective members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings + Saturday afternoons - once the courts are ready to use.

Open Day postponed - again!

Completion of the resurfacing work to the courts has been disrupted by the persistent wet weather. Appartently 2 or 3 successive dry days are required to install the final top surface and this is scheduled to start on Thursday 7th August.  However, the Committee has been force to postpone the Open Day and will announce a new date once the work is actually completed.

Despite the delays this is still an exciting time for tennis players in Cloughey - very shortly we will have excellent playing facilities and a club that will organise group sessions where you can meet other players.

Plans for Open Day - it will take place on a Saturday Afternoon.   Anyone who might be interested in playing tennis or joining the Tennis Club can come along and try out the new facilities free of charge.  There will be mini-tennis equipment for kids as well as a ball machine and a professional tennis coach on hand to give a few tips on how to learn or improve your game.  Advice on choosing the right type of tennis racquet will also be available.  Light refreshments will be served in the Pavilion.

Junior Coaching summer 08 - we are still planning to hold at least one junior coaching week before the end of the summer holidays - (probably 18-22nd August) - this will be 2-4pm mon-friday and will cost £25 per head - using professional tennis coach and proper teaching equipment for mini-tennis for the under 10s.  To register your interest email ha.dunn@btinternet.com

We are aiming to recruit members from a wide catchment area as the nearest other Tennis Club is in Donaghadee, so we expect to draw members from Portaferry, Ballyhalbert, Kircubbin and Portavogie. To download our latest tennis leaflet which you can show to friends and relatives - click here

14/7/08 New tennis club established in Cloughey

Cloughey & District Tennis Club was established - at last!   At a well-attended meeting 8th July in Cloughey Pavilion, a committee was elected, an interim constitution adopted and subscription levels adopted.  The Committee and officers elected are as follows:

Chairman:     Alistair Dunn     Hon Secretary:  Carol Clark    Hon Treasurer:     Geoff Harrison

Committee members: Elaine Bunting, Amanda Sefton & Geoffrey Bateman.

Club members will be able to play on the new courts free of charge and to book the courts in advance.  The courts will also be open to non-members who will be charged a fee per hour per court (not per person). We understand that the charge will be £6.60 per court per hour.

The Club will have use of both courts for Club sessions on 2 mornings (Mon & Wed) and 2 evenings (Tues & Thurs) as well as Saturday afternoons.  Group coaching and fun-playing sessions open to all members will be organised by the Club and this will give everyone the opportunity to meet other players and find regular partners of similar playing standard.

The floodlighting and new fencing have been installed, and the new surface is due to be completed by 20th July (weather permitting).  As previously reported the courts will have a polymeric porous surface which is recognised by Tennis Ireland adn the Lawn Tennis Association as 'state of the art' and ideal for coaching and high quality tennis.

Background story

Cloughey tennis courts were constructed some 45 years ago with 2 tar-mac surface courts.  They are open to the public but as they are in poor condition no charging or booking system has been in place for the last 20 years.

Since 2006, CDCA has been campaigning for better facilities so that organised coaching for juniors and a tennis club can be established in Cloughey. Ards Council showed interest in these proposals but required evidence that there would be a demand for using the improved facilities.   In the summer of 2007 CDCA decided to go ahead with coaching courses for juniors and the response was tremendous.  We  followed this up with Autumn coaching courses for both Juniors and Seniors right through to Halloween.

In January 2008, Ards Council approved a refurbishment scheme for the tennis courts.  Work commenced in May and is expected to be completed before the July holidays.

Junior Coaching
In August 2007, we had 2 very successful intensive coaching weeks with over 35 kids aged from 6 to 14 getting into the swing and showing great promise.

Anyone for tennis - come and try it out!

These sessions will be a first step towards establishing a tennis club in Cloughey.
If you are interested in playing now or in the future, please ring Alistair Dunn 4277 1080 OR email

Improved courts would allow us to organise regular coaching courses for juniors and summer coaching courses for visitors in peak holiday periods.
