In 2004, CDCA conceived and promoted the construction of this garden in a prominent location at Main Road overlooking the beach. The scheme was awarded an EU grant which enabled us to design and build an attractive garden with artistic panels about the Irish Regiments that participated in the Battle of the Somme in the First World War.
The new garden replaced some informal murals that also related to the First World War. We believe that the new memorial combines a fitting tribute with a beautiful garden area for everyone who wants to stroll through or sit in contemplation on the seats provided.
The final part of the formal garden has now been installed - a centrepiece by local artist Owen Crawford in the form of a war grave headstone in portland Stone. the illustration shows 2 children holding hands symbolizing hope for teh future. The Arts Council for Northern Ireland grant-aided this sculpture through their "re-imaging Communities" initiative.
The garden is maintained by the CDCA who arrange the grass cutting by contract. The weeding and planting is carried out by volunteers from the CDCA Committee and members of Lower Ards Community Assistance Group. Any volunteers prepared to lend a hand will be more than welcomed, contact Joe Maclean 4277 1006.
