A canoeist was rescued after capsizing in Cloughey Bay. The rescue was witnessed by many people in the village who were alerted by the presence of a police helicopter hovering over the bay. The chopper hung around for about 20 minutes while the inshore lifeboat made its way round from Portaferry.
The canoeist was picked up by a quick-thinking jet-skier and brought to a boat moored in the centre of the bay, from where the lifeboat was able to bring him safely ashore. This incident provides a reminder that even close to the shore lifejackets or flotation devices should always be worn. To read the Belfast Telegraph report click here.
