Fun Day and official opening of Childrens Somme Garden at Cloughey

Some 4 years since its creation, the Somme Garden was officially opened by Ards Deputy Mayor David Smith.  In a ceremony shortened by the high winds, the red tape was cut and everyone retired to the Montgomery Hall at Kirkistown Primary School.

Earlier in the afternoon, local children and some adults enjoyed a variety of fun activities including a climbing wall, bouncy castle, archery, carousel ride, face painting and a live owl demonstration. The windy conditions did not put off the kids who climbed to the top of the climbing wall.

The Fun Day was organised by the CDCA.

At the evening event, there were speeches by CDCA Chairman Derek Millar, former chairman Joe Maclean,.   William Montgomery of Greyabbey praised the achievements of the CDCA in Cloughey and finally a representative of the Somme Society gave a moving speech about what actually happened at the Battle of the Somme and the role of the 36 Ulster Division and the 16th Irish Division,

Refreshments were served as the audience were treated to another wonderful performance by the Dundonald Community Band.
