150 enjoy music and ceremony at Cloughey Somme Garden Memorial Evening
Dundonald Community Orchestra provided a wonderful accompaniment to the wreath-laying ceremony on 1st July to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. There was an excellent turnout of local people and visitors as the orchestra played some well-known wartime tunes.
The cermony was presided over by Wing Commander Joe Maclean, former Chairman of the CDCA with a reading by Rev David Gray. A lone turmpeter from the orchestra performed the Last Post after wreaths were laid on behalf of the CDCA, LACAG, Cloughey Bowling Club and Royal British Legion. Everyone joined in to sing the hymn Abide With Me before the ceremony ended.
The Orchestra then played a few more lively tunes as the crowd was swelled by some walkers coming up from the beach, attracted by the music.
This was an excellent event and we were fortunate with the weather, which was dry and warm after rain earlier in the day.
